The 80-hectare Zoo in Pretoria houses 2586 specimens of 126 mammal species, 1425 specimens of 158 bird species, 4189 specimens of 283 fish species, 235 specimens of 21 invertebrate species, 447 specimens of 90 reptile species, and 29 specimens of 4 amphibian species. These figures comprise the animals housed at the Zoo in Pretoria as well as at the two game breeding centres in Lichtenburg, in the North West Province and Mokopane, in the Limpopo Province and the satellite zoo and animal park at the Emerald Animal World complex in Vanderbijlpark.
The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa is the largest zoo in the country and the only one with national status. More than 600 000 people visit the Zoo annually. The total length of the walkways in the Zoo in Pretoria is approximately 6km.
An Aquarium and Reptile Park also form part of the Zoo facility in Pretoria. The Aquarium is the largest inland marine aquarium in the country.
The third largest collection of exotic trees can be found at the Zoo.

Visiting hours
The Zoo is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year from 8:00 to 17:30 daily.
Entrance fees
The entrance fee includes a visit to the Aquarium and Reptile Park, as well as the Zoo.
Adults: R45.00
Children (2-15 years): R30.00
Organized educational groups: R20.00 per person
Parking: R10.00 per vehicle
RESTAURANTS:
The cafeteria has a wide variety of delicious take-aways and four kiosks offer snacks. The restaurant also provides sit down meals. Our Mandrill and Duku-Duku restaurants� splended meals, fully licensed bar, soft music and excellent service will convince you to return time and again. There are numerous picnic spots located throughout the Zoo where you can relax in the shade of giant trees. Braai facilities are available at the picnic area located next to the Apies River.
PARKING:
Ample, secure parking is available opposite and at the main entrance of the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa and on the corner of Paul Kruger and Boom Streets. Security staff are on duty at all parking facilities for your peace of mind.
GOLF CARTS:
Golf carts are available for rent at R80.00 per hour or R150.00 for two hours.
CHILDREN PUSHCARTS
Children's pushcarts are available for rent at a cost of R30.00 for a single-seater for the day and R50.00 for a double-seater for the day.
ZOO TRAIN:
The Zoo Choo-Choo Tractor Train takes you on rides through parts of the Zoo.
SHOP:
The Zoovenir Shop has something special to take home for those who weren't able to visit the Zoo.
ACCESSIBILITY:
Most areas and restrooms are accessible to people in wheelchairs.
SECURITY:
Security personnel are on duty 24 hours a day for your convenience.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES
Educational programmes for schools are linked to the curriculum and designed according to OBE principles.
Programmes for the Foundation Phase consist of Educators' Guide Booklets that empower the teacher to conduct an educational experience for the learners.
